Three Easy Ways to Soundproof Your Home
Whether you live out in the countryside or downtown London, you may be wondering how you can best soundproof your new residence. Soundproofing is a valuable commodity in urban areas. The constant noises of the trains, buses, cars, and people are loud and unwanted when you are trying to sleep or enjoy your company. Before you start searching for how to soundproof your home, here are three easy tips for soundproofing.
- Fill Holes and Cracks
Many homes, buildings, and structures were built with drywall, which is a very thin board that does not act as a strong sound barrier. Drywall is easy to install and repair. It is also more affordable to purchase than many other soundproofing materials, such as sound block plasterboard. If your walls and ceilings were built with drywall, you will notice sound travels throughout your rooms. Drywall easily develops holes and cracks. If you notice there are holes and cracks in your ceiling or walls, you should fill them in. Filling in physical areas where sound can travel is the easiest way to soundproof your home.
- Check Windows and Doors
Many homeowners forget to check the integrity of their windows and doors. The wear and tear on windows and doors will cause the seals to degrade. If your doors or windows are old and weak, the sound will easily pass through them into your living space. Do you have a double-hung and glider window on the back porch? You can easily fit these windows with storm windows. Storm windows have thick glass and sturdy frames and are better at sound blockage than basic model windows. You should also consider installing a storm door. Storm doors add an extra layer of physical protection and will lower heating and cooling costs.
- Insulation
How long ago was your home built? What materials did the construction crew use to build your home? Did a builder slap drywall onto the wooden frames without properly insulating the area? Plasterboard is a cost-efficient material that is available in different sizes and grades. Like drywall, insulated plasterboard is very easy to install, but it offers more durability and sustenance. Builders will remove the old drywall materials and install the insulated plasterboard. Proper insulation helps cut heating and cooling costs. In most cases, plasterboard is much thicker than drywall. It will not only insulate your home but also create a better sound barrier in your home. It is less likely you will hear the outside sounds or noises coming from a different area of your home than it is when your home is built with drywall.
