Trouble Shooting of Centrifugal Pumps
Nowadays there are wide applications of centrifugal pumps in different kinds of industries which needs regular maintenance and inspection.
Quite often the pumps may develop certain problem where there may be a need for certain sanitary replacements parts too. Following are various problems and their possible causes and cures:
- No liquid delivery problem
Following are few causes and their cures:
- Lack of prime – Try to fill liquid in suction pipe and pump.
- Loss of prime – Suction pipe fitting joints may be leaking.
- Suction lift is high – Static lift may be high so liquid may be raised and pump lowered.
- Speed too low – Check the input voltage of motor.
- Rotation in wrong direction – Check motor direction
- Not sufficient liquid delivered
- Air leaking in suction pipe – Check the flanges
- Air leaking in stuffing box – Increase the pressure of seal lubricant
- Speed too low – Check the input voltage of the motor
- Suction lift is very high – Static lift may be high so liquid may be raised and pump lowered.
- Defective impeller – Check the impeller and replace if defective
- Suction inlet is not sufficiently immersed – Try to chain board to pipe for suction.
- Not enough pressure
- Speed too low – Check the input voltage of motor.
- Air leaking in suction pipe – Check the flanges
- Obstruction in flow of liquid – Try to inspect the impeller passage and the casing and try to remove the block if any.
- Too much impeller clearance – Adjust the clearance
- Air or gasses found in the liquid – Provide gas separation on suction line of the pump.
- Pump often stops
- Incomplete priming – Try to free all the air from the pump, valve and the pipes. High points in the suction line need correcting.
- Suction lift is high – Static lift may be high so liquid may be raised and pump lowered.
- Air/gasses found in liquid – Provide gas separation on suction line of the pump.
- Air is leaking in suction pipes – Check the flanges
- Pump draws too much current
- Liquid much heavier – Prefer to use larger driver and also consult wit the supplier for recommended size.
- Stuffing box getting too tight – Try to release gland pressure. In case you find packing is wearing off then try to replace them.
- Speed too high – Check the voltage applied to the motor.
- Misalignment – Realign the driver and pump.
